Mechanism of Action

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of ACTH(4-10) that enhances BDNF and NGF expression through TrkB receptor signaling, modulates serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, and activates PI3K/Akt neuroprotective cascade. Approved in Russia as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent.

Key Research Findings

  • Increased BDNF levels 1.4-fold and TrkB phosphorylation 1.6-fold in hippocampus after single intranasal dose
  • Enhanced striatal dopamine release and serotonin metabolite levels up to 180%
  • Prevented enhanced NO generation and restored neurologic function following cerebral ischemia
