Mechanism of Action
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide combining immunomodulatory tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) with a Pro-Gly-Pro extension. It modulates GABA-A receptor allosteric sites producing anxiolytic effects without sedation or dependence. Also enhances enkephalin levels. Approved in Russia for generalized anxiety disorder.
Key Research Findings
- Anxiolytic effects comparable to benzodiazepine medazepam but without sedation or dependence
- Affected expression of 45 of 84 genes related to GABAergic system functioning in frontal cortex
- Protected against ethanol-induced memory impairment by normalizing BDNF
- Reduced morphine withdrawal syndrome index by 39.6% after single injection
