Peptides vs SARMs vs Steroids: Research Classification Guide
Published: 2026-03-10Updated: 2026-03-10Category: Guides
Peptides, SARMs, and anabolic steroids are three distinct compound classes that are frequently conflated. They differ fundamentally in structure, mechanism, and legal status.

Classification Comparison
| Property | Peptides | SARMs | Anabolic Steroids |
| Structure | Amino acid chains (2-50 AA) | Small molecule non-steroidal | Synthetic testosterone derivatives |
| Mechanism | Receptor-specific signaling (GLP-1, GHRH, ghrelin) | Selective androgen receptor modulation | Direct androgen receptor activation |
| Selectivity | Varies — some highly selective | Tissue-selective AR binding | Non-selective — all AR tissues |
| FDA Approved | Yes (some — e.g. bremelanotide, tesamorelin) | None | Some (testosterone, nandrolone) |
| DEA Scheduled | Most are not | Not yet (Control Act proposed) | Schedule III |
| WADA Status | Many prohibited in competition | All prohibited | All prohibited |
Key Difference
Peptides act through diverse receptor systems — GLP-1, GHRH, ghrelin, melanocortin — and do not directly activate androgen receptors. SARMs selectively bind androgen receptors. Steroids non-selectively activate all androgen-responsive tissues and are Schedule III controlled substances.
Pepta Labs sells peptides only. No SARMs, steroids, or DEA-scheduled compounds. All products are research chemical reference materials for in-vitro use. See
